Organizing & Chapter Development: Increasing Member Activism & Developing Chapter Leaders (PDF)
This session began with a "success story" from Martin Goldstein, President of the Chapter at Santa Monica College. After an inspirational case study in chapter building, CA-AAUP leader, Patricia Hill, shared her experiences organizing a unionized faculty chapter at San Jose State that had grown from approximately 325 members to 735 members in several years.
Building & Maintaining Participatory Governance (PDF)
This session, led by CA-AAUP leaders Bill Powell and Janis Crystal Lipzin, explored what characterizes faculty roles in institutional governance in a variety of institutions and shared strategies concerning how to take advantage of opportunities for shared governance when they arise.

Handbook for New and Developing Chapters
Faculty establish a local AAUP chapter to serve as a bulwark against the erosion of faculty governance and the expansion of top-down decision-making. Other faculty organize (or re-organize) a chapter in response to a crisis. The visible presence of an AAUP chapter is an important vehicle for maintaining sound academic policies and professional standards within institutions; this is why faculty at many institutions have maintained AAUP chapters for decades.
This guidebook offers a wealth of resources, strategies, and tips to provide new AAUP chapter leaders with an introduction to the AAUP’s diverse work and the know-how to organize and develop a strong chapter.
