Censured and Sanctioned
Institutions in California
Loma Linda University (California)
The
1992 annual meeting placed the Loma Linda University administration
on censure following a published report on its actions to dismiss
three professors. The report concluded that the administration had
acted in disregard of the “1958 Statement on Procedural Standards
in Faculty Dismissal Proceedings” by denying them academic due process.
Two
of the dismissed professors had initiated litigation, and eight
years later their cases were resolved by settlement agreement. The
settlements prompted correspondence between a Loma Linda University
vice chancellor and the Association's staff about achieving removal
of the censure, with the staff proposing requisite changes in the
university's policies on academic freedom and tenure. No progress
during the past year in effecting these changes can be reported,
however.
A
complete list of administrations on the AAUP censure list is available
from the national AAUP website. See: http://www.aaup.org/Com-a/Censure.htm
Administrations placed
on the Association's sanction list (for serious infringements of
generally accepted standards of college and university government)
are listed at http://www.aaup.org/governance/sanctio.htm
